CARNECI, Carmen Maria

Carmen Maria Cârneci is a Romanian composer and conductor, born on 19 September 1957 in Răcila, Bacău County. She studied composition with Dan Constantinescu at the Bucharest Conservatory and later continued her studies with Klaus Huber in Freiburg as a DAAD scholarship holder. Her conducting education included courses with Pierre Boulez, Peter Eötvös and Kurt Masur.
Her output includes opera, orchestral, chamber, vocal and electroacoustic music. Among her notable compositions are the chamber opera Giacometti, the cello concerto REm, Trojtza, Das Hohelied, Semanterion–Toaca, O, viridissima and the OMENS cycle. She conducted the premiere of Giacometti in Bonn in 1996 and has appeared as a conductor in Stuttgart, Milan, Paris and Bonn. Cârneci is also a co-founder of the contemporary-music ensemble devotioModerna.
