CAREW, Molly

Molly Carew, born Mary Irene Carew, was an Australian composer and pianist known primarily for her popular ballads and songs for voice and piano. She was born in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, and later moved to England, where she became known in London musical circles. After her marriage to the physician Walter Heaton-Smith, she also appeared under the names Molly Heaton-Smith and Mollie Heaton-Smith.
Carew composed numerous English-language songs, frequently setting texts by contemporary poets and lyricists. Her works include Love’s a Merchant, Everywhere I Look!, Advice, Tiptoe, While You’re Away, Canterbury Bells, Fairy Cradles, The Piper of Love and Sunday. Several were issued in London by major music publishers such as Chappell & Co. Contemporary Australian reports indicate that her compositions were performed publicly and that she had established a reputation in London by the early 1920s.
