CARDENAS, Inmaculada

Inmaculada Cárdenas Serván is a Spanish composer, sound artist, musicologist and educator. She was born on 6 July 1952 in La Línea de la Concepción, Cádiz. She studied piano and history in Seville and completed a doctorate in 1981 with a dissertation on Andalusian Baroque music. Her doctoral studies also took her to the Sorbonne in Paris and to Barcelona.
Cárdenas joined the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1983, where she taught music history and developed extensive research in music education. Her pedagogical work centres on musical and sound creation, attentive listening, improvisation and the use of experimental music and new technologies in teaching.
Her compositions are primarily electroacoustic and experimental, frequently combining recorded sound with voices, instruments, theatrical elements, dance, visual media and sound installations. She founded and directed the experimental ensemble Espacio Permeable and later the Musical Creation Group of the University of Santiago de Compostela. Her works include Concierto para esculturas sonoras, A memoria e os xogos, Mosteiro Suite, O Cubo de San Agustín, A morte do Dansak, Serea e o contador de contos and Iguazú.
