CAMPOS DE ARAUJO, Joaquina

Joaquina de Araújo Campos (born 1 November 1906 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian pianist, composer and music educator. She studied piano and composition at the Escola de Música of the University of Brazil, where her composition teachers included José Paulo da Silva and Francisco Braga. She later taught music in Rio de Janeiro, including at the institution that became the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
Her work was closely connected with music theory, harmony and practical piano training. In 1937 she published Considerações a respeito do curso de leitura à primeira vista, transporte e acompanhamento ao piano, a pedagogical study devoted to sight-reading, transposition and piano accompaniment. She also published Curso de harmonia e morfologia musical, whose first edition appeared in 1949.
Reference sources describe her compositional output as including chamber, piano and vocal music. A biographical note published in Maria Luisa de Mattos Priolli’s Teoria Musical identifies the string-quartet work Quadro, the commemorative composition Cidade querida, and additional pieces for piano and voice.
