CALOS, Giselle

Giselle Galos, also published as C. Galos and Mme Théodore Galos, was a French composer of nineteenth-century salon and piano music. Her work became widely known through short character pieces for piano, especially nocturnes, rêveries, dances and lyrical miniatures intended for domestic and salon performance.

Her most famous piece is Le Lac de Côme, Op. 24, a piano nocturne that circulated widely in printed editions and became part of the teaching and amateur piano repertory in many countries. Other works associated with her name include Le Chant du berger, Dolorosa, Souvenir des champs, Grande valse cachucha, Violetta, Le Rêve and Cloches dans le soir. Her music belongs to the Romantic salon tradition, with an emphasis on melody, atmosphere, picturesque titles and accessible but expressive piano writing.

For many years her identity was uncertain because her music appeared under several forms of the name, including C. Galos, G. Galos, Giselle Galos, Galas and Mme Théodore Galos. Recent research has connected these names with Marie Cécile Larreguy, wife of Bernard Théodore Galos, active in Paris and Bordeaux. Although her biography remains partly obscured by pseudonyms and publishing conventions of the period, her surviving piano pieces confirm her place among the women composers whose music shaped nineteenth-century domestic and salon repertory.
