CALCAGNO, Elsa

Elsa Calcagno (1910–1978) was an Argentine composer, pianist, music critic, teacher and researcher. Born in Buenos Aires, she studied piano from an early age and continued her musical training at the National Conservatory of Music and Declamation. Her composition teachers included Floro Ugarte, José Gil and Pascual de Rogatis, and she later studied orchestration with Roberto Kinsky and Ferruccio Calusio. Calcagno’s output includes piano works, chamber music, orchestral and choral works, songs, and an opera. Much of her music is associated with Argentine musical nationalism, drawing on rural and folk melodic, rhythmic and harmonic patterns. Among her notable works are 12 Preludes for piano, Sonata for violoncello and piano, Concerto in C major for cello and orchestra, and the one-act opera El rosal de las
