CADY, Harriette

Harriette Cady, also found as Harriet Cady, was an American pianist, teacher, arranger and composer, born in 1856 and active in the early twentieth century. She is documented as a pianist in concert activity around 1912, including performances of music by Chopin and Wagner in Skaneateles, New York. Cady was also active as an arranger of piano music: the Sibley Music Library preserves her 1911 piano arrangement of Song of the Boatmen of the Volga, published by G. Schirmer in New York. She was associated with the early history of reproducing piano rolls, recording works for De Luxe and Ampico; a study of piano-roll catalogues identifies her as a pupil of Theodor Leschetizky and lists her among notable early piano-roll artists. Her known works include Danse Orientale and arrangements/transcriptions such as Song of the Boatmen of the Volga.
