Imperial Countess Mathilde Antonia von Schmettow Gyertyánffy de Bobda was born in Lyon on May 19, 1838, and died in September 1909. She was the wife of the Prussian General Count Rudolf Schmettow (1831–1870) and the lady of the manor at Gád, in what was then Torontál County (Banat). The village was inhabited predominantly by Serbs and Germans.
It is likely that she acquired her musical training at an Austrian school, much like her relative Countess Bertha von Náko (née Gyertyánffy de Bobda). The exact nature of her kinship with Countess Bertha von Náko (née Gyertyánffy de Bobda) has not yet been established.
Five piano compositions by Mathilde Antonia von Schmettow Gyertyánffy de Bobda have survived.
