Notes:

Shirley Bloom is an American composer, music teacher, and performer. Known for her neoclassical and unashamedly Romantic compositional style, she has dedicated a significant portion of her life to educating classical musicians and composing chamber and orchestral works. Bloom spent decades working in the New York musical community. While her own catalog features distinct instrumental pairings—such as her notable 1977 production "Duo in Concert: Contrasts in Sound"—she is widely celebrated for her lasting impact as a composition mentor. Among her most prominent students is the New York-born classical composer, cantor, and Bronx Symphony violinist Craig Madden Morris. Morris frequently credits Bloom alongside figures like Joelle Wallach and Kevin Scott as one of the central mentors who shaped his early musical voice. In recognition of her profound influence on his artistic path, Morris dedicated the central elegiac section of his acclaimed piece, Cello Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra, directly to her. Bloom’s compositional philosophy sits firmly within the lineage of sweeping American lyricism, balancing a thoughtful, structured design with high emotional resonance. Her mentorship passed along a deep reverence for the works of classical masters like Dvořák, Bach, and Brahms, blending traditional, lyrical impulses with 20th-century tonal textures.
