Liana Bertók (born as Liana Vicol) is a notable German pianist, composer, and music publisher of Romanian descent. She is highly regarded for her extensive work in classical chamber music and her deep artistic engagement with Sorbian musical traditions. Born in Ocna Mureș, Romania, Bertók showed immense musical talent early in life and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. By age 16, she made her debut as a piano soloist with the Iași Philharmonic Orchestra. She continued her higher education at the Higher School of Art in Iași, focusing primarily on piano performance while also studying counterpoint and harmony under the renowned Romanian composer Anton Zeman. After graduating, she moved to Germany, where she perfected her training under the Berlin pianist and composer Dieter Brauer. She also participated in international masterclasses led by distinguished figures like French pianist François-Joël Thiollier and Viviane Goergen.
From 1982 through the 1990s, Bertók built a strong reputation as a concert pianist in Germany, performing prominently with the Sorbian National Ensemble (Sorbische National-Ensemble) and at the German-Sorbian Volkstheater in Bautzen. Her performing career led to expansive tours across Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Poland, and South Korea, where she also taught masterclasses. Between 1985 and 2000, she shared her expertise as a faculty member at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden. After completing her teaching tenure in 2000, she shifted her professional focus primarily toward composition.
As a composer, Bertók’s rich catalog spans symphonic pieces, chamber music, art songs (Lieder), and film music. Her close friendships with modern composers initially sparked her passion for writing contemporary music. A central pillar of her career is her dedication to Sorbian music culture. Her efforts to preserve, arrange, and promote this unique minority heritage earned her the prestigious Domowina Prize in 2009. In October 2025, her lifetime achievements and commitment to Sorbian culture were further honored when she was awarded the highly esteemed Ćišinski Prize.
