BERLINER, Selma

Selma Berliner was a late 19th and early 20th-century German pianist, composer, and music educator. She was born in Poland, and later established herself as a skilled pianist and music teacher, primarily operating within the vibrant cultural circles of Germany. As a composer, Berliner wrote primarily for her own instrument, the piano, publishing works during the late Romantic era. Among her known published pieces is Etude mignonne (Op. 9), a short piano work published in September 1895 by the Berlin-based music publishing house Challier & Co. Because she was a Jewish female creator working in a heavily male-dominated era, much of her public footprint faded after the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany, which actively suppressed Jewish art. However, her personal legacy has been preserved through the Selma Berliner Collection held at the Leo Baeck Institute in New York. This archive safeguards her remaining autographs, original music scores, family photographs, and correspondence with contemporary musicians.
