BENNETT, Margaret

Margaret Bennett was a British classical pianist and composer who successfully established herself in the early 20th-century London music scene. Born in 1883, Bennett demonstrated an early affinity for the piano. From 1901 to 1906, she studied at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London. During her time at the Academy, she quickly gained recognition for both her technical mastery as a performer and her talent as a young composer, frequently premiering her own student works. As a composer, Bennett wrote across several classical genres. Her output was highly regarded by contemporary critics, and her musical creations were regularly highlighted in prominent publications such as The Musical Times. In addition to her composition work, she was a highly active concert pianist. Beginning in 1904, she organized and performed a successful series of her own concerts at London’s famous Bechstein Hall (which was later renamed Wigmore Hall).
