María Barrientos was a Spanish soprano, voice teacher, violinist, composer, pianist and conductor.
While studying at the Barcelona Conservatory, Barrientos composed a symphony at the age of twelve and conducted an orchestra that same year. She made her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1903 and at La Scala in Milan the following year. On Jan. 31, 1916, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Lucia, continuing to sing there until 1920. She then devoted most of her time to concert engagements; she also taught in Buenos Aires (1939–45).
