BARRETO, Jupyra Duffles

Jupyra Duffles Barreto, affectionately known as Dona Jupyra, was born in Sertãozinho, São Paulo, on September 18, 1913. She started piano lessons when she was nine and in 1932 graduated as a pianist from the National School of Music in Rio de Janeiro.
Following this she began teaching piano, choral singing, music history, and harmony at several music education institutions, such as the Francisco Flores School of Music, the Institute of Education, and the School of Music of the Fundação Mineira de Arte (FUMA) in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Her compositions are heavily inspired by Brazilian folklore, her passion for which she demonstrated in her membership of the Minas Gerais Folklore Commission.
