BALLASEYUS, Virginia

Virginia Ballaseyus (March 14, 1893 – March 27, 1969) was an American composer active in Northern California for much of the 20th century. Born in Hollins, Virginia, she was the daughter of Franz A. Ballaseyus, a German-trained musician and conductor. She settled in Northern California around 1903 and remained there for the rest of her life. By the early 1960s she was living in Berkeley, where she was active as a composer.

Her surviving work includes the song "California," held today in the collections of the San Francisco Public Library. She is listed among Northern California composers in library finding aids alongside contemporaries active in the Bay Area's mid-20th-century musical scene.
She died in California in 1969, at age 76, having spent roughly two-thirds of a century as a Californian composer.
