Shirl Jae Atwell is an American composer and educator. She holds a Bachelor's of Music Education from Kansas State Teachers' College and a Master of Music Theory/Composition from the University of Louisville and completed postgraduate work in music composition at the University of South Carolina.

Atwell's career includes numerous commissions and premieres. Notable works include the opera *Sagegrass* (1984), *Esta Hargis* (1991), and orchestral pieces such as *Movements Four South* (1993) and *Kentucke* (2008). Atwell retired from teaching in 2007 and continues to compose, conduct, and arrange music. She is an active member of ASCAP.
