ANDERSON, Marie Wilson

Marie Wilson Anderson was a little-known composer from Denver, Colorado, whose surviving work includes the Ralph Talbot Company March, written for Ralph Talbot Company No. 17 of the Uniformed Rank, Knights of Pythias. Although little is known about her life, the published sheet music features her photograph on the cover, suggesting the publisher took pride in promoting her composition. The march was written for a local chapter of the Knights of Pythias, a fraternal organisation dedicated to the principles of friendship, charity, and benevolence. At the time, members of the Uniformed Rank wore military-style uniforms and often carried ceremonial swords during parades and public events. Anderson's march stands as a rare surviving example of her work and offers a glimpse into the musical culture surrounding civic and fraternal organisations in the Ragtime era.
